The IX Regional meeting of Distributors of Latin American and the Caribbean of  CDS/ISIS and 1st Workshop: Natural Disasters Information Network for Latin America  and the Caribbean was held in Buenos Aires  Argentina at the Constituyentes Atomic Centre on October 23-25, 2000. There were over thirty participants including three Caribbean  countries namely Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica at this meeting. The presentations were held in both Spanish and English. For the duration of the workshop two interpreters were available namely Ms. Judith Reyes Bermudez and Ana Maria Acompo.

On Monday 23, 2000

After the opening address, the main session for the day called the Presentation of National Reports got underway. I read the national report for Jamaica entitled, Overview of CDS/ISIS usage in Jamaica: 2000 update The report was well received.

This session was followed by two presentations by Mr. Davide Storti from Unesco on winisis1.4 beta and Java Isis 3.0.  He demonstrated some of the added features of winisis1.4. The Data Entry Worksheet  validation feature now works. The export option has the following added features: -

  1. Line length
  2. Subfield separator
  3. From sorted hit file.

The print option has the following added features;

  1. printing of labels
  2. the sort worksheet has a print button

Mr. Storti commented that this version should be more stable than winisis v1.311, the version currently being distributed.  The Java Isis, he explained, is a client-server application to manage CDS/ISIS database through an internet/intranet connection by means of wwwisis package.

Tuesday 24, 2000

Demonstrations were done by Bireme on applications they had developed, JISIS and WWWISIS. They encouraged participants to log on their websites for other developments.  Demonstration of two additional databases designed in CDS/ISIS were also presented. The one on natural disaster was part of a project in Latin America and the Caribbean. This was presented by personnel from the Center for Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance, Payson Centre, University of Tulane. I contributed that there is a similar database being developed by CARDIN for the Caribbean. I gave the undertaking to contact with Miss Lashley of CARDIN with the view to initiating a dialogue between both organisations. NLJ had supplied the software and designed the database used by CARDIN to organised the data collected from the various islands. The other presentation dealt with integrating museums within the new information society.

Wednesday 25,2000

Mr  Davide Storti made another presentation on the vision and future of CDS/ISIS. He emphasized keeping the CDS/ISIS software vibrant.  This he said can be done by:

  1. promotion inside UNESCO and outside of UNESCO
  2. the need to distribute the software  to more clients.

He also acknowledged the developments of interfaces by different organisations; the different dispersed activities happening in CDS/ISIS as well as problems experience for example different languages. However he concluded by saying that strong advertising and training is necessary for the continuity of CDS/ISIS.

There were some suggestions for the improvement of the meeting:

  1. longer time is needed for these workshops so as to incorporate training in new application;
  2. more than one participant needs to attend the workshop especially if the distributor is not a technical person;
  3. there is a need for question and answer session.

The recommendations were done in Spanish but we were promised that English translations would be sent to us.

I brought back literature, diskettes and CDs on some of the presentations.  The Meeting was very useful and informative.
