The County of
Surrey
(Parishes
of Kingston, St. Andrew, St. Thomas and Portland)
The
County of Surrey
In
1758, the three counties of Surrey, Middlesex and Cornwall were created with a
view to the more convenient holding of courts of justice. Kingston was declared
the county town of Surrey: St. Jago de la Vega; that of Middlesex and Savanna-
la-Mar that of Cornwall. Today, the County of Surrey includes the parishes
of Kingston, St. Andrew, St. Thomas and Portland. This exhibition seeks to
highlight images of the County of Surrey featuring the parishes of Kingston,
St. Andrew, St. Thomas and Portland. Through these images we are able to
traverse the PEOPLE, PLACES AND PRODUCTS of each parish and bring the
story of each to life.
The
National Library of Jamaica has a remarkable assortment of images in its present
photograph and print collections. The photograph collection dates back to 1844
when Adolphe Duperly published his Daguerrian Excursions in Jamaica and also
includes the works of many photographers such as J.B Valdez, Cleary and Elliott,
J.W. Brennan, J. Tyndale Biscoe, images from the Daily Gleaner, the Daily
News and other contributors. The print collection consists of pictorial and
graphic representations of life in Jamaica and the West Indies dating back to
the seventeenth century. Significant items in the collection include eighteenth
century engravings and lithographs by Louis Belanger, James Robertson and copies
of James Hakewill's A Picturesque Tour through the Island of Jamaica from
drawings made in the years 1820, 1821 and 1825, Joseph Kidd's West Indian
Scenery, illustrations of Jamaica, 1833 - 1840 and Isaac Belisario's, Sketches
of Character 1837.
