Introduction

The phenomenon of Bob Marley as a singer and musician has intrigued a great number of people worldwide. Bob Marley did more than composed and performed. He brought Jamaica's indigenous art form - reggae - to the forefront of the world's pop-music scene. He was also the 'prophet' and 'teacher', conveying in his songs messages which touched and inspired millions, regardless of nationality or cultural background. He was, too, the 'ghetto youth', endowed with little more than his talent.

Both in Jamaica and abroad many have analyzed and assessed Bob's phenomenal success, resulting in a wealth of published material. There are also valuable primary materials on the 'king of reggae'. There is the possibility of these documents getting lost with the passage of time or going unnoticed and unused, if they are not publicized. To avoid these mishaps and at the same time, help keep his memory alive and pay tribute to the Honourable Robert Nesta Marley, O.M., the National Library of Jamaica compiled and published a list of the books and articles about, or by, the legendary reggae star. These are all available in its collection.

Since the publication of the first bibliography, there has been a proliferation of materials in various forms, giving rise to the need for an updated edition. Out of this need comes this list with several note-worthy additions, thus widening the scope in terms of forms. Users can now get information pertaining to audiovisual material, including compact discs (CDs). The bibliography can also be accessed via the INTERNET at the Library's Web site - nlj.org.jm. Here, users will find a most enchanting and captivating site listing items in various media.

The bibliography spans materials published from 1972 to March 1997 and is arranged in four sections. Section I lists books alphabetically by author, giving full publication details and the libraries call numbers. A few works, which do not deal specifically with Bob Marley, are included for the background information they provide on the social conditions and the development of popular music. Bob's records - many of which are in the library's collection and included in section IV - are recorded in those books which have the note "Discography". Three analyticals, describing parts of books dealing specifically with Bob Marley, are included in this section.

Section II lists articles in magazines and journals. The entries are arranged alphabetically by title. Most of the entries are in the Library's periodical collection while a few are in the Biographical Notes files on Bob Marley.

Section III is a chronological list of articles published in the national newspaper - The Daily Gleaner. Here, the source reference is given as follows - YR (year), MO (month), DY (day), and PG (page). The articles can be found in bound or microfilmed volumes of the newspaper, held by the library.

Section IV covers the library's collection of audiotapes, phonographs, and compact discs (CDs). These are arranged alphabetically by performer(s).

The bibliography is not exhaustive. For instance, articles from the other newspapers such as "The Star" and "The Observer" are not listed. However, these can be found in the Bob Marley file in the Library's Biographical Notes collection. No doubt there are other relevant materials, both in and out of the Library. Ongoing efforts are therefore being made to collect and document as many of these as possible.

This publication is one of a series of occasional bibliographies planned by the National Library of Jamaica. The series focuses on areas of popular interest and it is hoped that the bibliographies will be useful tools for students, scholars, researchers, librarians and other interested readers.

Biographical Note

Robert "Bob" Nesta Marley was born on February 6, 1945, at Rhoden Hall in St. Ann, Jamaica. As a child, he lived at Nine Miles in St. Ann, but moved to Kingston with his mother while still in his early teens. They lived in the Trench Town area and he attended several primary schools. Bob was sent to learn welding at the age of fifteen but gave this up for music, which he dearly loved.

In 1964 Bob teamed up with Neville Livingston (Bunny Wailer) and Winston McIntosh (Peter Tosh) to form the "Wailing Wailers". The group experienced many difficulties and membership changes, but eventually settled and called themselves the "Wailers". They formed Tuff Gong Label in 1970, which marked a turning point in their career. Soon the Wailers' reputation had spread outside Jamaica. After the breakdown of the group in 1974, Bob formed his own group "Bob Marley and the Wailers". His success was Phenomenal and he was acknowledged internationally as the world's best reggae music exponent.

At the peak of his career, and with many hits to his credit, Bob succumbed to cancer and died on May 11, 1981. Shortly before his death, the government of Jamaica awarded him the Order of Merit in recognition of his contribution to Jamaican music. Two statues have been executed in honour of Bob Marley. One by Christopher Gonzales, located at the National Gallery of Jamaica and the other by Alvin Marriot, which stands in Celebrity Park close to the National Stadium.

Bob Marley's musical legacy was left in good hands. His widow Rita, a reggae singer in her own right, and their children, "The Melody Makers", continued to build on their rich inheritance to the benefit of Jamaica.
