For Researchers
The Library offers reference service only. Three reading rooms are provided for public inspection of materials - the General Reading Room, the Rare Books Reading Room and the Special Collections Reading Room. They are open to the public as follows:
Monday to Thursday --- 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Fridays ----------------- 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Card catalogues are maintained for all collections. The computerized catalogue of books and pamphlets (NATCAT) is available on-line in the library. There is also a computerized database of the Map Collection and a card catalogue of Estate and Cadastral Maps.
Regulations for using the collections include the following:
- Only three items at a time are allowed to users
- Gloves, which will be provided, must be used when handling materials such as
prints and photographs.
For Publishers
The following services are provided to the local publishing industry.
ISBN
The Library is the national International Standard Book Number (ISBN) agency and has responsibility to assign ISBN numbers to local publications.
ISBN is an internationally accepted code that provides a unique numerical identification for a publication. The ISBN has five parts and consists of 13 digits with an hyphen separating each part as shown below:
Based on a directive from the Regional ISBN Agency at Caribbean Community Secretariat, the National Library of Jamaica will, as of April 1, 2004 implement a fee-based service which will require new publishers to pay a non-refundable registration fee and also for each block of ISBNs allocated.

Since September 1984, the National Library of Jamaica has been responsible for assigning ISBN to publishers in Jamaica. To obtain a number complete the Title Output Information form and the ISBN Request Form below.
ISSN
The Library is also the national centre for the International Serial Data System (ISDS). It therefore registers and assigns International Standard Serial Numbers (ISSN) to local serials.
The ISSN is an internationally accepted code that provides a unique numerical identification for a serial publication. It takes the form of the acronym "ISSN" followed by two groups of four digits, separated by a hyphen.

Cataloguing-In-Publication (CIP)
The Library provides Cataloguing-In-Publication (CIP) data for new publications. The CIP is a voluntary programme of cooperation between publishers and libraries. It enables the cataloguing of books before they are published, and the prompt distribution of this cataloguing information to booksellers and libraries.
The CIP record is provided to the publisher free of charge. This transaction usually takes about seven days.
Reprographics
Obtaining materials from the collection of the National Library does not imply the right to publish, recopy or reproduce them in any manner without the express written consent of the Library. All services require advance payment. Fees and charges are subjected to change from time to time.

Microfilming
The minimum amount of materials for microfilming is 10 feet. One roll of microfilm is equal to 100ft.

Photocopying
Photocopies may be made from select items in the collection. Cost is $7.00 per copy. Photographs and manuscripts are not photocopied but are photographed.
Photo duplication of materials is permitted for research and private study in accordance with the provisions of the Jamaica Copyright Act of 1985.
A declaration of purpose is required by the Act and is facilitated by our photocopy order forms. The Library reserves the right to restrict photocopying of rare and valuable materials. Photocopying of manuscripts, maps, photographs and prints are not allowed.
Photographs
The following costs for photographic services of archival material from the Library's collection are for handling, processing and reproduction. In cases where there are no negatives for requested photographs, a cost of US$2 is charged to create one.

Access to the Internet is free.
